"Kalighat patas” are a class of paintings on paper produced by ‘patuas’ in the neighbourhood of the famous Kali Temple at Kalighat , in Calcutta in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Popular themes included Hindu deities, satirical portrayals of Englishmen and 'babus', historical events, incidents of daily life, flora and fauna.
In recent times young Bhaskar Chitrakar of Kalighat is reviving this style with his own quirky twists. This patachitra depicts an imaginary scene where Charlie Chaplin plays the 'dhak' at Kalighat, while the gods, goddesses, cat and crow look on approvingly.
