An MFA from Vishva Bharati University Shantiniketan, Bikas Karmakar was a merit- scholarship holder throughout his years at art college. This young artist was hand-picked by his teachers during his first year itself for his skill in drawing. He trained extensively in the use of colour and mixed media, never losing sight of his aim to achieve harmony within a dichotomy. Soon, drawing colour and form almost involuntarily began to create an interplay that expressed his visual vocabulary.
Bikash draws his content from his surroundings, exaggerating the relationship of his subjects to create an interplay between them and their space. This becomes part of his visual dichotomy.
The integration comes with his inner instinct about the connection between subject and object which he expresses in his unique way.
This is why his paintings appear to have two styles – one in which the artist makes an effort to create a flux between the reaction of the figure and the space engulfing it; and the other where just a part of the body dominates the entire pictorial frame.
